Your first chiropractic visit is designed to help your chiropractor understand your health concerns, identify the root cause of your symptoms, and create a personalized care plan that supports your recovery and long-term well-being.
Three national clinical guidelines recommend spinal manipulation for acute low back pain:
1. US Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (1994) within the first four weeks of symptoms
2. Royal College of General Practitioners, UK (1996) within the first six weeks, noting the risk "is very low in skilled hands"
3. Danish Institute for Health Technology Assessment (1999) for acute pain with functional limitations.
A Canadian economic review (Manga et al., 1993) also found chiropractic care safer
and more cost-effective than medical management of low back pain
An evidence report by the Duke University Evidence -based Practice Center, USA (2000), concluded that cervical spinal manipulation is effective for cervicogenic and tension-type headache. Research by Hurwitz et al. (1996) further indicates that cervical manipulation and mobilization provide at least short-term benefit for some patients with neck pain and headaches.
The Scientific Monograph of the Quebec Task Force, Canada (1995), found that interventions promoting activity – including mobilization, manipulation and exercise, combined with medication where appropriate - are effective on a time-limited basis in the treatment of whiplash-associated disorders.
